Yes, it’s delightfully “Web2 era” to be beginning a blog. Defensive self awareness aside, I get to use my new platform to explain why I think it’s a worthwhile endeavour.
I was a backend software engineer in my past life at one of the investment banks (I like to joke that I was coding in the good ol’ days where we would copy and paste our code from straight from Stack Overflow). Any sort of development you do for in-house banking enterprise is characterized by risk aversiveness. The reality is that the technology you get to play with is ~5-7 years behind and this is by design. To put into context, “containerization” and “kubernetes” were bad words when I was leaving in ~2023.
Fast forward however many years and a post-grad program later, I start with Two Small Fish , an early stage deep tech VC firm. I was thrown into the weird and wonderful world of startupland. My initial days as a member of the investment team were spent hearing pitches day in and day out with some of the most creative ways to build and use tech. Our GP was encouraging us to use the latest tooling and kick the tires on anything we could get our hands on. I also realized that I was being exposed to technology and R&D efforts that are ~5-7 years ahead of mass adoption. Truly, there would be days that I would come home up to my eyeballs in AI existentialism since its pace is such a rollercoaster.
Whether you’re in a work environment that’s ~5-7 years behind or have been thrusted ~5-7 years into the future, technology will keep evolving and it’s curiosity that will move you forward with it.
I’m excited to share on this little corner of the internet about what I’m seeing in startupland and what I learn. There is a side quest here in that I also want to be able to keep up my writing skills.
I am able to laugh now at how my first loves of writing and coding are the first things the LLMs came to do for us.
